Bad Habits Part 1

Long about age 27, my metabolism slowed down - my knees began to fail - and my back started causing nagging pain. Safe to say, it was the first sign that I was getting older. Since then, I've moved around, had some life experiences and found myself with a big ole pot belly. Now, It's not actually huge... but large enough that it's noticeable. So, one day I walked up my stairs and got to my door and noticed I was breathing deeply. That's bad. Then I noticed that I had been hard at work at a few projects working 70-100 hour weeks since November 2008. Basically, I was bed ridden as far as exercise goes for 4 months. No wonder I was feeling like crap!

Thus, I knew a change was not only needed, but also necessary! The first bad habit I looked at was eating all hours of the night. I generally go to bed at midnight or shortly thereafter as I am a night owl, so I decided that I shouldn't eat anything after 9pm every night - period. This is my step one of three. I'll probably go into my next steps later. BUT! I started the no eating after 9pm the beginning of March and in two weeks I have lost 2.5 pounds. That may not seem like a lot, but think about it... that's 3500 x 2 + 1750 = 8750 calories in two weeks that my body has burned from one simple action. That means that I consumed about that many calories every week after 9pm (or whatever the amount that is per week that maintained my body at its previous weight). That's insane! Now at some point my body weight will even out and that's when I'll need my step 2 and 3... but I'm starting before that to keep momentum.

So, my goal has always been lose a pound a week until I reach my healthy goal. And to do it, to take baby steps so that they turn into habits and not fads. I'm tired of going in and out of things to only resort to the original bad habits... and I hope this approach works.
